Hiding in a tree, 5 year old Jewish boy Alex Kurzem witnesses his family murdered by a German execution squad. He escapes and after many harsh months falls into the hands of a Latvian police battalion. These soldiers adopt him as a mascot and he becomes a part of the Nazi propaganda machine.
